Frida Kahlo has been an influence for many years. Long before Madonna snatched up so many paintings and ignited media attention on the enigmatic and unusual Frida.

As a Tex-Mexican American with a streak of the gypsy rogue in her, I couldn’t help but be magnetically drawn to the larger than life artist.

Her adoption of an indigenous wardrobe made her more beloved and magnetic.

Sundance. Etta. Butch.

I was just a little girl when I watched Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid for the first time… and I recall particular scenes that stand out as either having an impact on me or resonating with me (most likely the latter).

The primary impression I recall is a kind of infatuation with each individual character and an overall attraction to the unidentified dynamics of the trio.

But, mostly I remember just wanting to be free. Free to call my own shots. Free to lay it all on the line. Free to die trying.

Lasts lined up in the shop. Unlike most bootmakers, @delacav actually has lasts specifically designed for women. We don’t use men’s lasts and size down. Invested in such to ensure proper fit. My female clients feel the difference. I’m proud of that. (at delaCav workshop. Tejas. )

Hecho a Mano. (made by hand) There are more than 140 steps that go into making a handcrafted pair of boots. Sometimes much more, depending on the complexity of the design, i.e. if we’re telling a story on the shaft with inlays, overlays, cut outs, hand tooling, braiding, etc.

Anyone who knows me, knows I’m a kind of a nerd…

That I get obsessed with historical figures (and historical periods) and devour every bit of information and media I can find until I’m nearly a scholar.

Part of this mania has to do with an obssession with costume & set design. When I watch movies, I’m generally focusing on tactile and emotional details - like the texture of a fabric, the cut of a skirt, the shape of a window, the color of a carpet, the complexity of a hairdo, the delicate accessories… the mood of the scene as played out in clothing and decor.

And all these little details are informed by history, so I imemrse in how historical context leads to an emotional landscape that informs the fashion, style & design of the time.

So I love when I get to peek into the world of inspiration that informs a movie’s costume & set designers.
